Exploring the Moon with Your Child

Every child, at some point in their life, notices the moon. As adults, we probably tend to ignore it. But for children, the wonder is just being awakened. For some kids, its a phase. For others, it may be the beginning of a life long love of astronomy.

If you know very little about astronomy, the moon is a very easy place to start. Here’s some ideas to help you explore the moon with your children.

Telescopes for the Amateur Astronomer

Telescopes offer two advantages to the amateur astronomer. The most important is the ability to intercept more light from an object. The second is resolving power, the ability to separate the fine detail of objects that are close together. This is very important when observing planetary detail or double stars. The diameter (aperture) of the telescope’s principal light collector, which can be a lens or a mirror, determines both of these advantages.
